The African American Ministers Leadership Council’s 2005 Spring Board Meeting began with keynote speeches by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC). Speeches given during the annual dinner for AAMLC/AAMIA board members addressed the current battle to preserve the filibuster and the upcoming fight against social security privatization. Pastors representing nineteen states and the District of Columbia attended the May 5 dinner in Washington, D.C. and met all day on May 6 to discuss issues important to the African American community.
Among the many highlights of the meeting was a press conference by AAMIA with Congressman Elijah Cummings (D-MD) to express support of the filibuster and opposition to the judicial nominations of Priscilla Owen and Janice Rogers Brown.
In addition to the press conference covered by C-SPAN and Fox News, clergy in attendance had an opportunity to hear from the following distinguished guests: Father Michael Pfleger (St. Sabina Church, Chicago, IL) and Hilary Shelton, Director, NAACP Washington Bureau.
